365 Days of Us: Day 68

Sunday. 29th May 2016.

Okay, so for those of you who know me, you’ll know I love, love, LOVE my footy; particularly the junior club I am currently the Administrator of, the Altona Junior Vikings.

Hearing the boys sing their club song after a win isn’t out of the ordinary… BUT… this win was fucking EPIC!

Parents screamed from the sidelines with hands red raw from clapping, our voices hoarse from cheering. We were down 30 points at the start of the last quarter and every single kid on that ground (and their families) dug deep to fight back. We were now ONE point behind. Stevie who had kicked 1 goal 6 behinds for the game, marks the ball about 30m out from goals and the the full time siren blows.

The crowd is in shock…

Stevie steps back, pulls his socks up and lines up for the kick. You can hear a pin drop, parents have their fists in their mouths, their hearts are punching spines. This is fourth on the ladder fighting to beat second on the ladder.

Bang, straight through the middle two pegs!

Wow, it was like we had won a grand-final. The boys raced to a huddle on the ground, thrilled, jumping, slapping backs, cheering… a GLORIOUS win from behind. Parents went mental!

Stevie’s in the middle of the huddle, trying his best to sing the words. He’s new to the club this season, hence his lack of knowing all the words… and that awkward part in the middle of the song is where each team changes it up and these boys don’t know what to bloody sing now! Anyways, here it is, in all it’s glory and awkwardness.

Go the Mighty Vikings! Man I love this club, and I was so so proud of every kid on the field today. Huge courage from behind to win!
